The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is the government agency which is responsible for issuing the driving licences and road safety in Greece. About the Greek Driving Test

In Greece, the Greek Driving Licence Test is a governmental right and is given to those who request to obtain a licence for any of the categories. For any category of vehicle, driving licence is must. For a motorcycle, the minimum age required to obtain the driving licence is 16 years, for a car is 18 years and for buses and cargo vehicles is 21 years. The Greek Driving Test can be taken in Greek, English, Russian or Albanian. To pass the Greek Driving Test successfully, 29 out of 30 questions must be correctly answered. Driving Licences in Greece

To obtain a Greek Licence for a vehicle, applicants need to follow a certain amount of formal instruction, both theoretical and practical, as well as pass the Greek Driving Test which is theoretical and practical tests. Only qualified teachers can provide driving and theory lessons, therefore enrolment at a driving school is required. Lessons are available in English, while the actual tests are in Greek. For A and B class vehicles, Greek Driving Licences are valid for 15 years from their date of issue.

For C and D class vehicles, the Greek Driving Licence are valid for five years from their date of issue. From the age of 65 onwards, drivers with Greek-issued licences must undergo health checks in order to remain the driving licence valid and should renew their licence every two years.

Steps to Obtain a Greek Driving Licence

    • The first-time drivers must sign-up for the country’s mandatory lessons. They are required to take atleast 21 hours of theory lessons and 20 hours of practical driving lessons. The charges of the Driving schools are between 750 and 1000 euros for the lessons and for the test fees.
    • Eye Test – The applicants must have health certificate issued by doctor and a certificate that an optometrist has tested your eyesight.
    • 2. The Theory Test – Once you submit the application, you have to take the Greek Driving Test. The Greek Driving Licence Test is taken on computer and can be taken in various languages such as, Greek, English, Russian or Albanian. The Greek Driving Test includes 30 questions.
    • 3. The Driving Test – They will be two examiners in the driving test. The driving instructor’s vehicle is used for the Driving Test. The Driving instructor evaluates the candidate’s knowledge on parallel parking, reverse on a turn, change gears at the top of a hill, what is under the vehicle’s bonnet an make a three-point turn.

Driving License Categories and Eligibility for taking the Greek Driving Test

  • 1. The eligibility for an AM – Mopeds, Light quadricycles is 16 years.
  • 2. The eligibility for an A1 – Motorcycles with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 125 cm3 is 18 years.
  • 3. The eligibility for an A2 – Motorcycles of a power not exceeding 35 kW is 20 years.
  • 4. The eligibility for an A – Motor tricycles of a power not exceeding 15 Kw is 24 years or 22 years if the person already holds a driving licence of A2 category for atleast two years.
  • 5. The eligibility for B – Motor vehicles with a maximum authorized mass not exceeding 3,500 kg and designed and constructed for the transport of 8 passengers is 18 years.
  • 6. The eligibility for C1 – Motor vehicles with a maximum authorized mass of more than 3,500 kg but less than or equal to 7,500 kg, is 21 years or 18 years if the person holds or applies for obtaining of a certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) of goods.
  • 7. The eligibility for D1 – Motor vehicles designed and constructed for the transport of upto 16 passengers, other than a driver, of a maximum length of 8 m is 21 years.
  • 8. The eligibility for D – Motor vehicles designed and constructed for the transport of more than eight passengers, other than the driver is 24 years or 21 years if the person holds or applies for the obtaining of a certificate of professional Competence (CPC) of passengers.
  • 9. The eligibility of BE – Combinations of vehicles consisting of a tractor vehicle in category B and a trailer or semi-trailer, where the maximum authorized mass of the trailer or semi-trailer does not exceed 3.500 kg is the person concerned must hold a category B driving license.
  • 10. The eligibility of C1E – Combination of vehicles consisting of a tractor vehicle in category B and a trailer or semi-trailer, with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 3.500 kg, where the maximum authorized mass of the combination does not exceed 12.000 kg is the person concerned must hold a category C driving license.
  • 11. The eligibility of CE – Combinations of vehicles where the tractor vehicle is in category C and its trailer or semi-trailer has a maximum authorized mass of over 750 kg is the person concerned must hold a category C driving license.
  • 12. The eligibility of D1E – Combinations of vehicles where the tractor vehicle is in category D1 and the trailer with a maximum authorized mass of over 750 kg is the person concerned must hold a category D1 driving license.
  • 13. The eligibility of DE – Combination of vehicles where the tractor vehicle is in category D and its trailer has a maximum authorized mass of over 750 kg is the person concerned must hold a category D driving license.
